VTech InnoTab 2S Review

Both of my boys are really into video games and apps and have been obsessed with our iPad since we bought it a while back. I don't really mind them playing video games and such but as a parent I am always considering the educational value of things and when it comes to games like Angry Birds and Super Mario Bros. I feel that they're not exactly challenging their brains the way they should.

Well, I remember seeing the VTech InnoTab 2S on a commercial a few months ago and decided that it was exactly what I was looking for... Something that is video game-esque but that is more on the educational side. So when I was given the opportunity to review the new VTech InnoTab 2S of course I jumped on it!

Not familiar with the InnoTab 2S? VTech's InnoTab 2S is a Wi-Fi equipped learning app tablet that gives kids their own tablet similar to mom and dads but keeps them engaged while they learn. Designed for kids ages 3-9, this multi-functional tablet for children combines a photo/video camera, interactive animated e-books, creative activities, tilt sensor learning games, and a rich collection of applications into toy that is similar to mom and dads devices but is durable enough for kids.

We've had the InnoTab 2S for about two weeks now and my boys play with it non stop. The InnoTab 2S does come with one game cartridge as well as two free downloads that can be uploaded to the device wirelessly using VTech's Learning Lodge Navigator and a Wi-Fi connection. We also went ahead and purchased a Penguins Of Madagascar cartridge to offer a little variety for my boys.

Out of all of the features on the InnoTab 2S, I would have to say that Brayden and Trevor's favorite is definitely the camera. They love that they can rotate it one way to take pictures of themselves then rotate it the other way to take pictures of each other. Of course the fact that they can draw on and add stickers to their photos makes it that much more fun.

Having more than one child, I love the fact that you can create a different user profile for up to four users. Each user can have their own photo wallpaper, user name and avatar, and greeting... Now there's no fighting over whose is whose... Kids can simply select their own name and create their own artwork and such on their own account.

I would have to say that even though we absolutely love the VTech InnoTab 2S there is definitely one draw back... The fact that it runs on 4 AA batteries. Batteries are not cheap, and when you have a device like this that kids actually enjoy and use it daily, batteries need to be replaced quite frequently which can turn into a big chunk of change in a short period of time. I would absolutely love if it was equipped with a rechargeable battery pack like other video games and grown up devices.

That being said, if the only thing I can find wrong with this device is the fact that my boys love it too much, I guess I can't really complain. Overall, we give the VTech InnoTab 2S a big thumbs up and I would definitely recommend it to anyone with preschool and elementary aged kids.

You can purchase the VTech InnoTab 2S in two colors- blue for the boys and pink for the girls- for a suggested retail price of $79.99.

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for VTech and received a VTech InnoTab 2S to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.
