Midnight Alias by Elle Kennedy {eBook Review}

Midnight Alias (Killer Instincts #2)
by Elle Kennedy

She’s smart, seductive, and in way over her head.
He’s her only way out.

An undercover DEA agent has gone off the radar. Suspecting an internal mole, the government needs Luke Dubois and his elite team of operatives to recover their man, and the New Orleans native thinks he’s found his way inside the dark underbelly of Manhattan: Olivia Taylor, the girlfriend of a mob boss and the sexiest woman he’s ever laid eyes on. His new mission objective? Get past Olivia’s defenses and convince her to take a chance—on him.

All Olivia wanted was to finish law school and live a normal life, but that dream was shattered when one dangerous night put her deeply in a mobster’s debt. Now Luke and his team will help her escape—in exchange for intel on the missing agent. But Olivia doesn’t anticipate her intense attraction to the reckless Louisiana charmer or that she’ll be forced to risk everything—including her heart.

I generally don't read a book in a series unless I've read the preceding books but when I read the blurb for Midnight Alias I knew it would be right up my alley. Luckily, even though I haven't read Midnight Rescue, the first book in Elle Kennedy's Killer Instincts series, I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

Luke and his team of mercenaries have been hired by the DEA to help find a missing agent, and while this job doesn't have the action these guys are used to, it does have a perk... At least for Luke. Luke is tasked with staking out The Diamond Mine, a strip club where the DEA agent has been doing his dealings, and that's where he meets Olivia.

Poor Olivia hasn't had an easy life... Her dad died when she was little and she's spent years working multiple jobs while still trying to get a college degree and take care of her mom who's had cancer on and off for most of Olivia's life. To top all that off, she's indebted to Vince, her boss at The Diamond Mine, and has been saving all of her money and biding her time until graduation so she and her mom can escape his clutches.

When Luke and his team show up and find out about Olivia's situation with Vince they offer to help her escape if she'll help them gather some intel on the missing DEA agent. Unfortunately, nothing quite works out the way everyone hopes it will and there are some definite twists and turns to keep you guessing.

While I enjoyed Midnight Alias, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Along with the main romance between Luke and Olivia, we got a side story between two of the other operatives and I felt like it kinda took away from the main story. From what I understand, Trevor and Isabel were introduced in the first book and have their own book after this one... I just didn't feel like it added anything to this particular book, but that's just my opinion.

Overall, this was a great romantic suspense with likable characters and enough action to keep me interested... That being said, I'm not sure that I'll read any other books in the series right now but possibly in the future.
