All of Me (Love Between the Bases #1)
by Jennifer Bernard
Coming May 26, 2015
Jennifer Bernard, the USA Today bestselling author of the Bachelor Firemen series, scores another homerun with a brand-new series about sexy, single baseball players.
Playing for the Kilby Catfish is hotshot pitcher Caleb Hart's last chance to salvage his career after a major league meltdown. But the day of his opener with the minor league team, Caleb strikes out with the gorgeous woman who is delivering a petition to run the unruly Catfish out of town. Now, to stay in the lineup, Caleb will need to score big with the feisty brunette he can't keep out of his thoughts.
After the nasty lies Sadie Merritt's rich ex-boyfriend spread about her all over town, she's lucky to have a job at all. She can't afford to screw it up by falling for the player who is supposed to be helping her change the image of the fun-loving Catfish. But that's easier said than done when Caleb's voice alone is enough to make her pulse race. And when he surprises her with a mind-blowing kiss, she knows there's no turning back.
This was my first Jennifer Bernard book and being that I'm not a huge fan of baseball in general, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it, but the synopsis intrigued me so I had to give it a go. Luckily, All of Me offered the perfect balance of romance and baseball so I didn't find myself getting lost at any point. That being said, I can't exactly say that I'm in love with this one either.
Did I enjoy it? Yes. But there was still something missing for me. The characters were okay and the story was good but the romance was so back and forth with these two that by the end I was kind of over it.
After a huge scandal involving Sadie's ex, she has one friend left in the town she grew up in, a job in the mayor's office that she's way overqualified for, and a mother who's constantly reminding her that boys are nothing but trouble. Understandably, she's a little wary when it comes to men, especially playboy athletes like Caleb.
Caleb messed up his first shot in the major leagues so he's the newest pitcher for the Kilby Catfish, the minor league baseball team in the town where Sadie lives. After a terrible first day he meets Sadie when she stops by to talk with his coach on an errand for the mayor. He's instantly intrigued and starts pursuing her.
I loved the beginning of their romance and had high hopes after the way things started out. They spend a lot of time talking on the phone while he's traveling with the team and things heat up pretty quickly when he gets back home. Unfortunately everything started to fall down hill rather quickly from there. Both keep their secrets bottled up so tight and are equally as quick to walk away which really got on my nerves after a while... And the big break up towards the end? No amount of groveling could have made up for the way Caleb acted towards Sadie, in my opinion.
All of Me wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and I definitely had a few issues with it, but overall I enjoyed it. The drama with Caleb's dad and Sadie's ex definitely made it interesting and kept me wanting to finish just I could find out how it all played out.
Being that this was the start of a series and I really liked the side characters, I'll probably read the next book in the series... I just hope the romance keeps me invested enough in the characters to really enjoy it.
