Flight from Death by Yasmine Galenorn {Book Review}

Flight from Death (Fly by Night #1)
by Yasmine Galenorn

From New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn comes an all-new series set in the realm of her Otherworld novels.

I’m Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Now, not only do I have to adapt to Earthside culture, but every time I turn around, somebody’s trying to kill us. And worse, Alex is as gorgeous as he is exasperating. But you know what they say: All’s fair in love and bounty hunting…

When an old friend of Alex contacts him about a haunting at the High Tide Bed & Breakfast in Port Townsend, Washington, we think we’re on a simple ghost hunt. But our investigation quickly transforms into a deadly fight as we uncover an eighty-year-old murder, a cursed house, and a dark force trapping the spirits within. To stop impending disaster we must break the curse and lay the angry spirits to rest.

This was my first Yasmine Galenorn read and I honestly had no idea what to expect when I went in... All I knew was there was a dragon shifter heroine and a vampire hero and I was hooked. Unfortunately while I did enjoy Flight from Death to an extent, I was highly disappointed in the romance aspect of the book.

Shimmer is a dragon shifter that has been exiled from the Dragon Reaches and has been sentenced to five years Earthside. She's been working for Fly by Night Investigations Agency for a few months now and they've finally gotten their first big case since she began working there. A friend of Alex, Shimmer's boss, needs their help with his haunted bed and breakfast.

I can honestly say that the paranormal aspect of this book really sucked me in. I was a little worried that I hadn't read the author's Otherword series and I thought that I might feel a little lost going in but everything was set up perfectly in this one and I didn't feel lost once. I think that might all be thanks to Shimmer and the fact the she's new to Earthside and all the supe's that lurk around... I felt like I was learning about all of these species of supernaturals right along with her.

While I did enjoy the paranormal aspect and everything that went along with it, I really wish the romance was more front and center. I mean, Alex was in a relationship for a few years, breaks up with his girlfriend, and the next day him and Shimmer are just kind of together... I didn't really get it in the beginning and, unfortunately, I still wasn't convinced in the end. We're left with them deciding that they're going to give their relationship a chance and I'm really hoping the romance is more pronounced in the next book in the series.

That being said, if you're a fan of paranormal then this book is definitely for you but if you're like me and you like your romance to be the main focus in a book, then you might be left a little disappointed in the end like I was.

So after all is said and done will I continue with this series? I'm definitely going to check out the next book to see where the relationship between Shimmer and Alex goes from here and I guess I'll play it by ear after that.

Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of Flight from Death in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
